How to Use Neuroplasticity to Create the Life of Your Dreams
The human brain can change and grow throughout our lifetimes.
Isn’t that amazing?!
It’s called neuroplasticity.
Want to hear something even more amazing?
We can influence this growth and change so that we have more of the feelings, take more of the actions, and get more of the results we want in our lives. We can decide what feelings, actions, and results would make up our dream life and then get to work creating that!
We have the keys to our universe!
It takes awareness, self-love, intentionality, and practice.
Ready? Read on.
Step One: Awareness
The most important truths to understand to start using neuroplasticity to create the life of your dreams are the following:
- Your thoughts cause your emotions, actions, and results.
- Your thoughts are optional.
Your thoughts are a big deal. They are at the root of all the results you have control over in your life right now.
We reinforce our current thought patterns all day long every day and they get stronger and stronger. They become so engrained that our brains struggle to see that our current thoughts are just choices we have made over and over about what to believe.
The first step to using neuroplasticity to create the lives of our dreams is to be able to bring awareness to our thought patterns as we go about our daily lives. A great way to do this is to choose a cute journal you love (or use a note on your phone) and make it your best friend for a while. Whenever you notice a strong feeling write it down in your notebook and see if you can trace it back to a thought. If you are taking an action you don’t necessarily want to be, pause for a moment, grab your bestie, and again, try to trace that action back to the thought causing the feeling that is causing the action. If you have a result in your life that you don’t necessarily want, you guessed it, trace it back to your thoughts causing the feelings and actions that are creating that result for you.
The only way this is going to work to create your dream life is if you do it with the utmost level of love for yourself.
Step Two: Self-Love
Greater awareness can be painful at first. It can be a shock to see how often you feel something like anxiety, stress, dismay, self-doubt, etc. It can equally be a shock to become aware of underlying thoughts or to start to tie your actions and results back to optional sentences in your brain.
It becomes even more painful when we make the existence of what’s there mean something about our self-worth.
Let’s be clear. Nothing can touch your self-worth. It’s not dependent on any particular result in your life. It is inherent in you.
When we correlate self-worth with any part of our thought, feeling, action, result process we add suffering on top of what can already be painful.
However, when you know that your self-worth isn’t at stake here, and if you can continually approach your own mind with love, then you can start to create space for making choices in the moment about what thought patterns to focus your mind on.
Step Three: Intentionality
Just like it is true that all the results you have in your life right now are caused by your current thought patterns, it is also true that all the results of your dream life are caused by different thought patterns.
Because we can grow and change our minds, we can teach our brains to use those thought patterns that would create our dream life more often thereby creating our dream life!
It’s kind of crazy!
It’s a common misconception that we have to create a dream before we become the person who does it when in reality, we have to create the thought patterns, in other words becoming the person who creates the dream, before we can actually take the action and get the result.
Consider your dream life. Consider the actions you need to take to create it. Consider the way you would need to feel to take those actions. Map the thought patterns that would create those feelings for you. Finally, practice!
Step Four: Practice
Just knowing the thought patterns that will create your dream life is not enough. To actually change the neural pathways in your brain, you need to practice those new thought patterns.
This takes continual refocusing throughout your day. It takes continual awareness, self-love, and intentionality.
